Underworld: Blood Wars (2016): The Final Battle for Survival and Power

It had barely been a year since the release of Blood Wars (2016) in which the last installment in the series was directed by Anna Foerster. The movie brings the war into the end where vampires and Lycans have come to a point of extinction as both species fight relentless and desperate battles for survival. And just like our previous explanations of the transition of the two armies, we are swept into the story of Selene as she finds herself in the midst of the war again fighting not just her own but the extinction of her kind. Blood Wars, which takes shape as the last installment of a centuries-long war between vampires and werewolves was highly intriguing since all parties cheaply sacrificed themselves in order to win.

What impressed me in Blood Wars is how it used the well-known elements of the earlier movies, both the internal conflict and development of characters, action scenes, and supernatural background, and supplemented it with new developments and cheerful events. However, the film reached its culmination by giving closure to the character of Selene, and yet still clarifying the tension that would be brought against both vampires and Lycan by one useful conclusion — this dreadful showdown will ultimately change the galaxy forever.

Selene: The Ultimate Warrior

Sure enough, in the movie, Kate Beckinsale as Selene is a very key focus of the film. ‘Blood wars’ this time, however, is more hardened and battle scarred than ever. After the events of Awakening, she had become an outlaw who is being pursued by both vampire and Lycan. The part that I found the most interesting regarding Selene in the aforementioned movie was her growth, yes, growth to be a survivor rather than simply a fighter, appropriating all the focus on cause; she was a woman who needs to look out for herself and for EVE, her daughter.

Selene’s journey in Blood Wars is a search for atonement and self-realization. Particularly challenging for her mentalizing: having lost her love and everything in the previous films and possession of their breeding ground of the corps, Michael or merely gaining love, Seline has absolutely nowhere to go except back to the dark side. Being a witness that made me rise to the game and take back the power that you possess reminded me how it is that in this life when we are left with nothing at all, we stand up and fight for what matters most.

Selene’s desire for her daughter Eve remains a major theme in her narrative. Despite not appearing in person on screen, Selene owes her urge to fight to the presence of her daughter Eve. It seems to me that the emotional layer underlying Selene’s character is the readiness to give up her own life for the sake of her daughter Eve, which reminds me how sometimes throughout our journey we draw so much strength from those around us, that we can still carry on to the end when all appears lost. The Lycans: A New Leader and a New Threat In Blood Wars, the Lycans are even more threatening than they were previously, this time because of their further development under the new leader killed by Tobias Menzies, Marius. He’s a born leader-take-no-prisoners type warrior. Of the aspects concerning Marius that intrigued me, there is the fact that he is a new kind of Lycan.

Marius’s thirst for control is increased by the need to obtain Eve and manipulate her hybrid blood to produce a race of super Lycans. With Selene trying to keep her daughter’s location secret from Marius and , stop him from fulfilling his objective, this causes another reason for suspense in the film. With regards to Marius, I remember due to his dominance that some people in the course of their lives would go on a quest for supremacy that leads them nowhere and mostly through other people’s cost.

The Lycan methods of operation in Blood Wars are practically at a whole new height than most of the previous films and this makes them a great enemy. In any war, factions drew further to modern eyes and arms, and guerrilla tactics, and that got me to think because, in any given situation conflict changes, so does the methods employed.

The Vampire Coven: Machinations and Treachery

In Blood Wars, the vampire coven is a disjointed and inharmonious entity, constantly faced with the threat of being divided by infighting and power plays. One of those caught in the mix is Semira, played by Lara Pulver, a power hungry vampire who intends to usurp the leaders of the covenant so that she can become their new commander. Semira’s character is the embodiment of an evil characteristic of the vampire world at least one of zealousness ambition and treachery.

What I found interesting about the vampire coven in Blood Wars is how it transcends fiction power politics. The dressing of Semira’s character where she stops at nothing to go to the apex of the pyramid is a true mirage of life where acquisition of power usually brings rifts even to the loyal. This, combined with Semira’s goal-oriented energizing of other characters make the film unnecessarily complex, for it is most obvious that vampires have not only lycans to deal with, but also themselves.

Among those few vampires who wholeheartedly side with Selene are Thomas, played by Charles Dance, and his son David played by Theo James. It is the cross-critics of the vampire screenplay that ensure her safety and give some honor and loyalty to this corrupted clan. David’s character, in particular, emerges as one of the more satisfactory remnants of the film series, Blood Wars when he grows to be at the forefront of combating for the vampire race. He had a special place for Selene and somehow made me realize how, in this world, an unwavering trust and friendship would assist you in tackling any problem you might come across, even the worst kind.

Underworld: Blood Wars

The Northern Coven: A New Ally

Perhaps one of the most impressive parts of Blood Wars, visually, is represented by the Northern Coven. A new faction of vampires who reside in a hidden ice fortress. The Northern Coven being led by ancient vampire Lena, portrayed by Clementine Nicholson, is a typical censorable protection towards the present violent society of masquerade vampires sitcoms.

Selene flees to the Northern Coven, where she is helped to harness new abilities that will enable her to stand up to Marius and his troops. What I found fascinating in the Northern Coven, is its being the exact opposite of taking up arms for the vampires- a means of endurance and strength. This I have observed in life that there is always another side to a coin; there are many ways to acquire power or climb the success ladder and that friends we never would have thought in the beginning are able to help later on.

The cold naturally brings in a new geographical location to the Northern Coven, which differs from the usual of dark city scapes as in the other films in the series. The calm but lethal features of the Northern Coven are similar to how as much as some places may appear paradisiacal in essence there are rough edges and hidden troubles and hazards that lie within them.

The War Ends: A Fight for Tomorrow

The plot of Blood Wars culminates in a spectacular last stand against Marius and his faction that consists of Selene, her vampires, and the werewolves. The situation has never been more complicated than now as all the two kinds of creatures are fighting for existence. What is even more interesting about this last scene is the way it interlaces all the aspects of the previous movies, particularly the fighting, the magic, as well as the fights on a personal level, in a manner that is appealing and moving as well.

With the new abilities that Selene acquired from the Northern Coven, she is able to alter the course of the battle and kill Marius in a vicious battle. Marius undergoes great defeat which puts an end to the quest that he has of total control however brings with it the end of the desire of control amongst Lycanthropes. The end of the year has provided opportunities to recognize that even insane odds can be overcome where I was inspired by Selene And, when all around seems decisively stacked against us.

Blood Wars is not just the culmination of the protagonists’ brawling; it is actually more about the decisions each character takes. For example, Selene chooses to continue the fight in order that one day, vampires and Lycans might reign together – this is one change that I welcome. It is of how one can alter the course of history and rise above the incessant fighting that I believe is what the author meant. He had established a theme that spared him from narrow focus. Rather, it haunted him for whole of his life. He says: ‘To be a part of it is easy. Helping devise and construct a great American play is easy.

The Themes of Redemption, Power, and Survival

Underworld: Blood Wars, at heart, is a story concerned the themes of forgiveness, strength, and the will to live. Selene in this last piece goes on a quest of redemption where she tries to clear the mess she caused as well as ensure a future for her daughter and her kin. The realization of what he had just done made me appreciate the notion of the self- sacrifice in the resolution of human conflicts. This is, “self-sacrifice for others comes more easily.” For example, at the restaurant and the cafeteria after school, the students pay for food.

Power is another prominent theme of the film, especially demonstrated through Semira and Marius, who epitomize the negative aspects of power. Their thirst for power leads them into self-destruction and in such cases it does help me remember how in the real world, if any individual seeks for power without caring about the others, the outcome would be obliteration.

Lastly, the theme of survival is always underlying in Blood Wars as well, since both the vampires and Lycans are in a war for survival respectively. The movie elaborates on the fact that to survive one has to be physically strong, but it is not only about being strong rather it is about being flexible, being loyal and finding ways of how to survive in a new environment. This theme is something that I related to because it is in line with the common problems faced by people in the real world while trying to survive to the changing situations of environments.

Why You Should Watch It

First things first, Underworld: Blood Wars is the best of the series in terms of action and graphics, lots of magic, love, intense combat, and a moving storyline. It also assists in bringing completion to Selene’s character arc while raising significant questions of power, survival, and forgiveness. For those who love the dark romanticism, supernatural action or the survival theme, Blood Wars has something special for you, an action packed and a heart warming film.

In fact, while watching Underworld: Blood Wars, I was impressed by wild ambition, the importance of making amends, the choices that people make, what we do to gain power and as well what happens when we abuse it I was overwhelmed by how powerful the film was in addressing relevant societal issues. It’s a movie that resonates with real life, telling us that while there might be vampires as well as Lycans in the world being portrayed, the battles of who we are and what we want out of life, and the battles that fight the war of the world, are common.

In summary, Underworld: Blood Wars made me look back at power, loyalty and the aspirations for the better tomorrow in a whimsical way. It is a film that has not only intense action and amazing pictures, but it also addresses more complex topics, which you will not find only in the vampires and lycans world. Unfortunately, the saga is over, but the struggles to endure, to atone, and the desire to live, march on regardless of when the last sword drops.
