It has been more than a year since the return of the chosen children was announced and we have been able to enjoy practically half of the 6 films. We’ll tell you what we think so far. So we are exploring Digimon Adventure tri anime film series here.
It is a fact that the Digimon series was never the same after the first adventure where we met Tai, Matt (Yamato) and company. Over the years the direction the franchise has taken has gone through turbulence in terms of direction. Digimon Adventure I and II are definitely (and personally) the best that has happened to the franchise, character continuity, more or less well-justified stories and that vibe of competition with the king of cartoon creatures: Pokémon.
At the moment when Toei decided to announce that we would see the return of this generation and coincidentally at the time where it seems that the nostalgia factor is the most important selling point, many fans decided to come out of their retirement to see what would be the chosen ones. In a model that was not at all risky and that would surely be much simpler in terms of production, 6 films were announced that would arrive at a certain time with limited exhibitions in Japanese movie theaters. Fortunately for fans outside of Japan they would be broadcast on streaming services like Crunchyroll and in chapter format. Each film installment is divided into 6 chapters.
Now that we are halfway through this story, we will tell you what we thought of it so far.
A little time has passed after the events of Digimon Adventure II, Digimon have mysteriously begun to appear in Japan and it is time for the original 8 chosen to face this threat. Curiously, the 3 main characters of the 2nd generation have disappeared and little is said about their situation within this new series, although they will surely appear at some point (we hope).
During these 3 films that basically seem to be written in the same way: everything starts calmly, then there is a bit of drama, fight, drama again and an ending that gives rise to the next film. Without forgetting that in each one we see the mega digivolution of the already classic characters like Agumon, Tentomon, Gabumon and even Palmon. This format of each tape having the same tone becomes a bit tiring and repetitive. As for the animation we have small contrasts, at certain moments it is quite dynamic and striking, at others a little stiff and even a little sloppy. We want to assume that in the retail launches everything has been corrected as usual.
